This position is located within the Supply Chain Management, Transportation Section at the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) in Redding, CA. The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for driving various vehicles while transporting patients, employees, cargo and mail to different destinations such as various (VANCHCS) facilities, other medical centers and private residences.

Requirements:

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work of the position requires long periods of driving, lifting and normal dexterity. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of patients. Must be able to help non-ambulatory patients from vehicles, wheelchairs or gurneys. Such lifting may require considerable physical exertion, since some patients are debilitated or paralyzed. Patients must be moved correctly while using proper body mechanics to prevent injury. Moderate physical effort is required in handling objects weighing up to 30 pounds and occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo.

WORK CONDITIONS: The person in this position is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. Drives in all types of traffic, weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. The operator is subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading or unloading vehicles. May be required to clean potentially infectious spilled bodily fluids such as blood, urine, vomit and feces from vehicle and equipment. Training to be provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
