About the Position: This position is in Defense Health Agency, Directorate of Administration, Patient Administration Division located at Twentynine Palms, CA. The city is home of Joshua Tree National Park Headquarters and proud host of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: updating patient medical records; gathering/input data from an automated medical record coding system; knowledge of coding books and procedures; AND identifying the correct medical code for each procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Specialized Experience GS-05 : One year of specialized experience which includes: researching electronic health systems; utilizing various office automated systems and software; retrieving medical records and reports from databases; AND knowledge of basic medical coding system and procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education : Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
General Experience GS-04 : One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled such as providing quality customer service, answering customer inquiries, utilizing automated systems, AND knowledge of medical terminology.

Education : Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

Medical Coding Certification is highly desired.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATION: Certification from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) with either Clinical Coding Associate (CCA), Clinical Coding Specialist (CCS), Clinical Coding Specialist - Provide Based (CCS-P), or American Academy of Professional Coders Certified Professional Coder (CPC) - Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) is preferred.
